XRP is the coin of the XRP Ledger, a blockchain that went live in 2012 with a focus on fast, cheap payments between countries. The network does not use mining: a group of validators agrees on each block in a few seconds.

The company Ripple uses XRP in payment products for banks and businesses. The price tends to move sharply on regulatory news in the United States, where Ripple spent years in a lawsuit with the SEC.
